The Rainbow Bridge
THE HONEYMOON BRIDGE, THE UPPER STEEL ARCH BRIDGE

The Rainbow Bridge was built close to the site of the Falls View Bridge which had collapsed on January 27, 1938, due to an ice jam in the river (also referred to as The Honeymoon Bridge or the Upper Steel Arch Bridge). The Rainbow Bridge is a steel arch bridge linking the United States at Niagara Falls, New York and Canada, at Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Construction for the new bridge began in 1940 and on November 1, 1941 the official opening of the bridge took place.

The previous year King George VI and Queen Elizabeth dedicated the future site of the Rainbow Bridge while on a Royal Tour of Canada.

The Rainbow Bridge spans a distance of 950 feet (289.5m) and was designed by architect Richard (Su Min) Lee. During the construction nets were placed under the bridge to catch any workers that accidentally fell and there was no loss of life during the construction of the bridge.

The Rainbow Bridge is a four lane bridge. No commercial trucks are permitted from using the bridge. Commercial vehicles are encouraged to use the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge located aproximately 16 kilometers or ten miles to the north.
